  • Time: 8am to 4Pm

Venue:

Johannesburg:131 Riverside Road, Sandton
031 201 0307 ( Durban Office )

R 3,000.00

Deposit:

  • A 30% non-refundable and non-transferable deposit is required in order to register for the workshop.  If the workshop is cancelled by the trainer due to insufficient numbers the deposit will be refunded.

About the workshop:

This workshop is designed to help the clinician distinguish the particular needs of the Oppositional and Defiant child from other disorders including childhood depression which can present many similar symptoms and behaviours. The workshop focuses on techniques to use with children, parents, and in consulting with teachers including:

  • Components of ADHD
  • Common Developmental Features
  • Prognosis
  • Assessment
  • Medication
  • Goals of Treatment
  • Techniques
  • Limit Setting
  • Communication
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Ego Boosting.

This practical workshop will be aimed at helping the therapist or counselor engage the reluctant adolescent in a working alliance without being pedantic or condescending.

Handling a child’s anger can be one of the most distressing, confusing and draining experiences tor teachers and parents alike.

Parents and teachers frequently turn to the counselor. Or other mental health professional for help in coping with and understanding angry children, but such professionals are rarely trained in specific techniques to help these difficult children and the people who care for them.

From a developmental point of view, ineffective responses to a child’s anger can lead to a poor self-image, a lack of social experiences, and the missing of many important childhood milestones. From a behavioural point of view, angry children are more likely to engage in anti-social and delinquent activities and aggressive acts.

Another disturbing aspect of a child’s uncontrolled anger is the angry feelings which may be stirred up in adults. There is a high correlation between angry children and abuse and violence in the home, suggesting that any treatment must take both intrapsychic and systemic factors into consideration.

This workshop will not only help mental health professionals use techniques and interventions more effectively, but will also re-energize them in their work with these difficult children.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to differentiate the causes of a child’s anger
  • How to choose techniques according to the specific diagnostic categories, including: Conduct Disorders, ADHD, and Oppositional Defiance Disorders.
  • How to treat children “without a conscience”
  • How to effectively involve parents and caretakers in treatment
  • How to consult with teachers for maximum therapeutic effect
  • How to run an “anger management” group
  • How to integrate play therapy, behavioural, cognitive, and systems interventions.
  • Identifying and using community resources –Activity and sports techniques
  • Ways to repair missed developmental tasks
  • Using interpretations successfully
  • 3 stages of play therapy with angry children
  • Family techniques that really work
  • Homework assignments for parents

Marschak Interaction Method:

The Marschak Interaction Method (MIM) is a structured technique for observing and assessing the relationship between two individuals. It consists of a series of simple tasks designed to elicit a range of behaviours in four dimensions.

The MIM evaluates the parent’s capacity to set limits and to provide an appropriately ordered environment (Structure), to engage the child in interaction while being attuned to the child’s state and reactions (Engagement), to meet the child’s efforts to achieve at a developmentally appropriate level (Challenge), At the same time it allows assessment of the child’s ability to respond to the parent’s effort.

In addition to allowing a close look at problem areas in the relationship, the MIM provides a unique opportunity for observing the strengths of both adult and child and of their relationship. It is, therefore, a valuable tool in planning for treatment and in determining how to help families, strengthen their relationships. The description of the relationship that results from this observation is a valuable aid in determining the appropriateness of custody arrangements, reunification, foster placement, and/or adoption.

Filial Therapy

Filial / Family Therapy is a didactic and dynamic training method that involves parent in the therapy of their children by teaching and supervising them in the basic methodology of child-centered play therapy.

Participants will learn how to structure and conduct training within a ten week format – including content and organisation of weekly sessions and logistics of supervision / feedback of parent- conducted sessions.

Through video tapes of parents conducting play sessions, participants will learn how to supervise parents within the context of the group format.

Filial Therapy has been shown, through research and clinical experience, to be an effective intervention for children and families experiencing a variety of social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. This unique therapy involves parents as the primary change agents to resolve child-related problems and to encourage children’s healthy psychological development. Filial Therapists train and supervise parents, as the parents conduct child-centered play sessions, which not only helps eliminate presenting problems, but strengthens parent, child and family relationships. Participants will learn how to tutor parents through live demonstrations. This course is only available to those persons who have completed a 2 Day Workshop in client-centered Play Therapy.

Developmental Touch Therapy

Development Play is a highly compact, structured, developmentally-based Group Therapy Programme. It provides individual and group therapy for young children, training for adults and training for you, the Professional Leader. The purpose of the touch is simply to enable the child to experience his / her living body self. The Developmental Play Therapy is unique. Adults learn to do Developmental Play through exercises that enable them to experience themselves seen and touched, exercises that help them see and touch others. Developmental Play has proven effective with children who have relationship problems at the attachment level: Psychotic, Attention Deficit Hyperactive (ADHD), sexually and physically abused, and destructively acting out children.

This is therefore one of the FIRST FORMAL TRAINING towards becoming a Certified Sandplay Therapist in South Africa by ISST.

The confusion between the use of the words Sandtray therapy and Sandplay Therapy (Founder Dora Kalff) continues despite several attempts to clarify the differences.

Since the Sandplay method developed by Dora Kalff has recognizable parameters, there is value in keeping it as a separate recognizable type of Psychotherapy.

Perhaps the time has come to keep the term Sandtray as a generic term and reserve the term Sandplay for the specified method of Psychotherapy (Jungian) in using sandtrays (Kay Bradway, Journal of Sandplay Therapy, 2006)

Outline of Literature:

Sandplay practicalities and practice:

Symbols: An exploration of the concept, characteristics and experience of symbols. Differentiating, signs, symbols and archetypes. The image and power of symbols as they present in the sand.

Sandplay cases and case material: Exposure to case material provides a rich and essential platform for familiarization with, and apprehension of, paths and patterns of psychic energy as it  constellates in the tray: and of the effect this constellation has on the player.
Whole cases, part cases, or single sessions will be used to study and explore their intrinsic dynamic and significance, and to highlight particular issues and concepts.

Image and Healing: An essential component of Sandplay is working with images. This topic explores what makes the activity of image making valuable in practice and includes an exploration of it’s context in human culture beyond the sand tray.

Jungian perspectives: Key themes from Jungian psychology and their use as a framework for Sandplay work.

Cultural perspectives: Introduction to the symbolic language of myths and fairy tales, working with specific tales and their use in understanding psychological process. Examples of Myth in Sandplay. film, artwork and literature and how they inform our understanding, practice and experience.

Child development in relation to Sandplay: Core aspects of the development of the personality and a sense of self. The impact of trauma and the potential use of Sandplay and pre-sandplay. The interplay of inner- and outer- worlds in the child psychological development.

Psychopathology: The purpose of this series is not to make diagnosticians of trainees. It aims to develop trainee’s skills in thinking about, and being alert to the possibility of formal illness, its varied presentation and meaning, and how to set up and use an appropriate support network in this regard.

Historical perspectives: Differentiating Jung as a historical figure from the many fictions about him and placing him and his work in the context of the emergence of modern psychology and psychotherapy. Background, history and contexts of Sandplay. (BISS)

Codependency: This insidious pattern is the basis for most dysfunctional family patterns. We work with family secrets, sources of shame, “people pleasing,” and other aspects of codependency. Learn how to assist people to release their victim patterns, set healthy boundaries, and reclaim their own personal power.

Addictions:Learn to identify and treat behaviour addictions and compulsive use of substances. Learn to use the Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy model to treat the source trauma, release core shame issues, and eliminate addictive behaviours.

Sexual Abuse:This is currently the most pervasive underlying dynamic for both men and women who enter therapy. You will develop skills to feel more competent in facilitating people’s work through these issues. You will learn to identify body memories and how to work with them.

The Mind/Body Connection: Many people somaticize their emotions and then experience a variety of diseases. You will learn to go down to the source of this pattern with a variety of physical complaints. We will also continue to explore body memories which manifest in the body as a result of childhood trauma.

Curriculum: Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapist Certification (Year Two):

Eating Disorders: You will learn to work with the underlying emotional issues of this addiction as well as how to integrate hypnotherapy with a twelve-step model.

Sex Addiction:You will learn how to identify and treat sex, co-sex, and love addictions. You will take people back to the core feeling which triggers their addictive behavior and heal the emptiness.

Relationships:You will learn new hypnotherapy techniques to work with relationships, including the double regression, owning our own issues in relationships, and setting clear and permeable boundaries.

Grief, Loss and Unhealthy Separation:You will focus on identifying unhealthy “styles of leaving” and changing them. We will experience completion rituals, and clear choices about next steps.

Let’s Discover Me

lets-discover-me

The Discovery Game

The discovery game is specifically designed to help children who are resistant to involvement in play therapy and are unable to verbalize their emotions.

The discovery game will minimize the therapeutic process, by providing the therapist with information on what the child is thinking, thus giving insight into how the child is feeling and subsequently, how the child is acting out his feelings.

The game helps children to free themselves sufficiently to reveal previously suppressed thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

The game has been developed to help the therapist understand the child’s thought process. If the therapist understands the thought process the therapist can help the child change prevailing misconceptions.

Hypno-Behavioral Therapy:
Key to Unlocking your Clients’ Core Issues

The Hypno-Behavioral Therapy model combines:

  • humanistic psychology(Gestalt, TA, the body/mind)
  • developmental psychology (inner child work)
  • behavior modification techniques (classical and NLP)
  • hypnotherapy (traditional and Ericksonian)

A heart-centered holistic approach into a REVOLUTIONARY new psychotherapy, both brief and deeply healing.

We teach highly effective treatment tools that address body, mind and spirit. We call this work Heart-Centered because that is where it begins. The therapist, operating from intuitive loving acceptance, creates safety for the client to open up to their own deepest level.
Through the session, the therapist encourages the client’s emotional release, achieved in age regression to traumas, with the same Heart-Centered bond. And the session always ends in that place of gentle self-acceptance, worthiness, and Heart-Centered love.

Most people are unaware of the vast amount of information stored in the sub-conscious mind. Once this material is brought too awareness, change comes quickly and dramatically! Hypnosis is the way to get down to the “source” of problems. It also is the way for people to re-connect with the dissociated emotions and the disowned parts of themselves. So much treatment today focuses on co-dependency and “healing the inner child” Hypnotherapy is the most powerful way to really reach and heal that lonely, fearful or abandoned inner child.

Hypno-Behavioral Therapy returns the responsibility for emotional health and behavior change to the client, and provides a process that allows the client to follow their own profoundly exciting road to self-discovery. Each session is as profound for the therapist as it is for the client, and the deep healing is a gift for both of you.

What this training offers you

  • It is for practicing Masters and PhD professionals, so everyone in the class has the same basic level of proficiency at psychotherapy.
  • It devotes 30% of time to the “how-to” of hypnosis, and 70% to how to do therapy in the trance state, how to work with a multitude of presenting issues.
  • It utilizes age regression and emotional release, as well as post-hypnotic suggestions, scripts, guided imagery, metaphors and much more.
  • It focuses on the client holistically as body, mind and spirit.
  • It offers hands-on, supervised practice so that when you return home you win be competent to use these skills immediately.
