We hope you will join us to set the standard for practicing Sandplay Therapy in South  Africa, as described by ISST.

Participants have the opportunity to learn from a special group of trainers not usually accessible in South Africa.

Sandplay Therapy (founder Dora Kalff) and the training of participants to become, if they wish, certified Sandplay Therapist in South Africa, will be guided by the President and board members of ISST until we fulfill the ethical requirements in South Africa to form ethically the South African Association for Sandplay Therapists. This is therefore one of the FIRST FORMAL TRAINING towards becoming a Certified Sandplay Therapist in South Africa by ISST.

The confusion between the use of the words Sandtray therapy and Sandplay Therapy (Founder Dora Kalff) continues despite several attempts to clarify the differences.

Since the Sandplay method developed by Dora Kalff has recognizable parameters, there is value in keeping it as a separate recognizable type of Psychotherapy.

Perhaps the time has come to keep the term Sandtray as a generic term and reserve the term Sandplay for the specified method of Psychotherapy (Jungian) in using sandtrays (Kay Bradway, Journal of Sandplay Therapy, 2006)

Outline of Literature:

Sandplay practicalities and practice:

Symbols: An exploration of the concept, characteristics and experience of symbols. Differentiating, signs, symbols and archetypes. The image and power of symbols as they present in the sand.

Sandplay cases and case material: Exposure to case material provides a rich and essential platform for familiarization with, and apprehension of, paths and patterns of psychic energy as it  constellates in the tray: and of the effect this constellation has on the player.
Whole cases, part cases, or single sessions will be used to study and explore their intrinsic dynamic and significance, and to highlight particular issues and concepts.

Image and Healing: An essential component of Sandplay is working with images. This topic explores what makes the activity of image making valuable in practice and includes an exploration of it’s context in human culture beyond the sand tray.

Jungian perspectives: Key themes from Jungian psychology and their use as a framework for Sandplay work.

Cultural perspectives: Introduction to the symbolic language of myths and fairy tales, working with specific tales and their use in understanding psychological process. Examples of Myth in Sandplay. film, artwork and literature and how they inform our understanding, practice and experience.

Child development in relation to Sandplay: Core aspects of the development of the personality and a sense of self. The impact of trauma and the potential use of Sandplay and pre-sandplay. The interplay of inner- and outer- worlds in the child psychological development.

Psychopathology: The purpose of this series is not to make diagnosticians of trainees. It aims to develop trainee’s skills in thinking about, and being alert to the possibility of formal illness, its varied presentation and meaning, and how to set up and use an appropriate support network in this regard.

Historical perspectives: Differentiating Jung as a historical figure from the many fictions about him and placing him and his work in the context of the emergence of modern psychology and psychotherapy. Background, history and contexts of Sandplay. (BISS)
